100 facts
Inspired by "Me, myself and I" by Andi here is an evergrowing list of 1001) (little known2)) facts about me:
- My middle name is Melanie and for years I growled at everyone addressing me with it as I hated that name. I have since accepted it, but I still prefer Gina by far.
- I've never been at a disco in my whole life and I don't have the slightest feeling of regret about this.
- As a small child I couldn't stand cheese. I've loved it ever since my parents tricked me into actually trying it3).
- I have a scar on my right knee from falling up some stairs at the local playground when I was a child.
- I always wanted to be a boy. That stupid wish finally vanished when I hit puberty
and when I discovered that I could still be me with all my boyish hobbies even without actually being one. - Puppets have scared me for some years now. Before, I just didn't like them. Maybe Chinga is to blame. I've also never owned anything from that Barbie stuff in my whole life and am quite happy about this.
- I was offline until 2001. Thus my knowledge about anything networky is still quite new.
- One of my incisors is actually glued together as I managed to run against a pillar back in elementary school and break it in half. It has lasted for 18 years now although my dentist back then “promised” me that it would break for good within 10.
- I've never smoked, neither tobacco nor anything else. I also hate the smell of tobacco.
- I don't drink alcoholic beverages, can't stand the taste of even the slightest hint of alcohol. Consecutively, I've never been drunk in my whole life.
- While I'm a computer geek, I still don't drink coffee. Simply can't stand the taste. I get my caffeine (when I need it) from Jolt or caffeine pills.
- I love watching soccer, but only Euro and World Cup. National matches, Bundesliga and Champions League don't interest me the slightest bit.
- I collect NICI plushies and geeky t-shirts.
- I didn't have TV for the last 3 or so years (neither cable, nor satellite, nor DVB-T), then I got a DVB-T stick for our HTPC in time for the FIFA World Cup 2010, and in 2012 cable (mostly for high speed internet…). Our HD TV is still mostly used for playing on the gaming consoles (PS2 and PS3, sometimes Wii) and watching movies, series and anime either on DVD, BluRay or via the HTPC.
- The Apple cult disgusts me.
- It took me until 2007 to obtain a driver's license, thanks to the BPPV which prevented me from getting it while still in school and later my time consuming studies and an empty bank account were to blame
. After joining the workforce I then managed to get it on the first try though after 31 practical lessons
- The hardest time in my life was the fifth and sixth grade (and to some degree the seventh as well) thanks to mobbing from my class”mates”. Today I think it made me stronger and taught me to fight back in time to prevent something like this again – that still doesn't make me be grateful for those years though. To this day I don't know for sure what caused it, but I guess I was simply too different.
- I was born on the Vernal equinox of 1983.
- I'm a dog person. Dogs love me, cats not so much – I think they somewhat smell it

- I'm afraid of spiders, heights and when alone and there are funny noises also the dark.
- I love to read. My mother used to read books to me in the evening when I couldn't yet and I loved it. I think that primed me: as soon as I could read, it was sufficient to hand me a book to keep me busy and quiet for hours.
- I've suffered from severe motion sickness since I was born. Anything longer than 2km by car meant either medicine or puking when I was younger. Today, I still get sick when traveling longer distances by car, train or bus. It doesn't happen though when I'm driving myself, so I at least can now look forward to long routes

- That motion sickness is also very picky when it comes to 3D gaming. I usually try to test play any game at a friend or using a demo version before I buy it thanks to this – it has happened that I bought a game and then couldn't play longer than 20min straight without ruining my evening for good (e.g. Morrowind). You learn to be careful then

- I'm a big fan of classic point and click adventure games since my parents got me Simon the Sorcerer for christmas in 1995 or something like that. Since then, Simon got overtaken by Guybrush on my list of personal adventure favourites

- My english was pretty mediocre until I got the english version of The Dig from my then-boyfriend. I played it with enabled voice-overs and subtitles and a dictionary in reach. After that, the ice was broken

- The first english book I ever read out of school was The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. The slangy english in there really lost me from time to time – I still remember trying to figure out what “Dunno” meant and how frustrated I was that I couldn't find that word in my dictionary.
- I used to watch a lot of TV until I got internet.
- I can't stand it when people code in anything else than english, e.g. by commenting in their own language or using localized names for variables, methods, classes, etc (“getDatenbankVerbindung” anyone?). It interrupts my reading as I have to switch languages then given that most programming languages use english keywords.
- I prefer tabs over spaces for indenting my code, but I can adjust to any coding guidelines given if I have to – although some of them really might make me cringe

- I love baking. Cooking on the other hand… not so much something that I enjoy. It can be fun though when experimenting with a new recipe is involved, and I don't have to do it alone.
- I'm 1.78m tall and right handed.
- I almost fully understand italian (while being able to speak it only in a very stuttery way) and can decipher most romanic languages thanks to 5 years of latin.
- Somewhen in my life I want to visit Iceland, Japan and New Zealand.
- My eyes used to be blue, then started to change to green with a hiatus to gray over the course of the last 20 years. They have now arrived at a light greenish color.
- I usually don't wear any make-up.
- I hate the taste of german bottled water. IMHO it tastes too much like iron. I don't have this problem with italian water.
- I exclusively wore digital wrist watches until 2003 since while I was perfectly able to read analogue ones it simply took too long for my taste. Then demod stole my watch for three weeks and gave me his analogue one as substitute. Since then I've fully switched to analogue wrist watches

- I despise airheaded women. Might have something to do with number 18.
- During childhood, most people recognized my frist name from Gina Lollobrigida. Later in life the recognition shifted towards Michaela Schaffrath's pseudonym and people actually seem to think of themselves to be original when making corresponding references. It makes me aggressive and I find it insulting.
- I have a very low tolerance for spicy food. Anything above pepper makes my eyes tear up and my throat feel like on fire.
- I like very hot water when showering.
- I try to rise at 7am on work days to be in the office at half past eight, but my body would actually prefer sleeping times from 3am to 11am.
- I always sleep bad the first night in a new setting (e.g. in a hotel).
- I'm told that I get funny when I get very tired late in the evening. I don't know, I usually can't remember very well what I said the next morning

- I prefer diving underwater to swimming on the surface. The three dimensional possibility of movement in water simply feels awesome, kind of like I'd imagine flying would feel like.
- I suck at volleyball and I also don't like it very much. I don't know which of the two came first.
- While I usually had no trouble keeping up in the sports lessons at school and got quite good marks, I did not like them.
- I love letting fly my stunt kite.
- Most horror movies scare the living crap out of me. Survival horror games are really not my thing as well and even induce real fear of death. I think my brain doesn't get it very well that what's happening is not real.
- When I was a small child I had no issues with deep water. After some years of constant reruns of Jaws on TV and my father always watching it when it was on that sadly changed. I try to fight that fear whenever I get the chance to do so.
- My biggest wish for christmas when I was three was an electric drill. I got it when I was 18

- I can't remember ever blindly following a trend. Usually when something suddenly becomes hip it induces mistrust and rejection in me. That sometimes changes after I have some time evaluating the thing in question further.
- Related to the previous fact, people blindly drinking the kool aid of any kind (compare number 15) without any consideration make me angry.
- I'm a geek.
- I evaluate electronics by their ability to run ScummVM and thus Monkey Island.
- In my courses at university I used to draw weird cartoony characters on the margins of my notes to visualize stuff like algebraic kernels just for shit and giggles.
- I hate most of what falls into the genre of hip-hop.
- Usually I have three or more textbooks on assorted computing matters and an equal amount of fiction on my mount-to-be-read as I tend to buy them even if I do not intend to read them immediately but “some day”.
- Meat is something I only enjoy eating in small servings. I also don't like eating fish very much. I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian though.
- I collect prodir ball pens. They also used to be my preferred type of ballpen but now they've gotten competition by the uni Power Tank which I mostly use these days.
- Before switching to almost only using ball pens, my preferred means of handwriting was one of my several LAMY AL-star or LAMY safari fountain pens with a medium sized nib. I still carry them around daily though, including a package of ink cartridges.
- I am told that while my handwriting looks very nice, it still is a bit hard to read from time to time. I never had any issues though and even intentionally optimized some of my characters to be better distinguishable from each other over the course of 9th grade. It hasn't changed much since.
- I enjoy singing, but only when just people I trust are around. I usually sing along loudly when I am working alone at home or driving alone and while doing so am listening to my music collection.
- I'm subscribed to both the german Java Magazine as well as the german National Geographic. Those two are about the only printed periodicals that I read.
- I thoroughly enjoy driving fast. But only when the highway is free and weather and light conditions allow it6).
- I love learning and trying out new stuff.
- I got my first electronics kit for christmas in 1989. I did the experiments with my parents helping me to decipher the instructions as I only had learned to read the same year and we had a lot of fun building mini coilguns
Since then I've loved to play around with electronics. - My parents refused to buy me NES, GameBoy or SNES. My aunt somewhat secretly gave me one of my cousins many GameBoys as a present in 1992. I only ever had three games for it, Mario Land, Duck Tales and Zelda, the latter which I loved with a passion.
- I tend to shout at other drivers when they behave stupidly, although (or maybe because) they can't hear me. This way I don't have to hold in my anger and am quite relaxed when I arrive even with the usual amount of idiots on the street.
- I hate carnival.
- Due to both the 2009 election campaign related and the previously shown madness of the German Government I became a member of the Piratenpartei, the german Pirate Party. I left in 2012 after continuous disappointment by its public member's apparent inability to behave like grown-ups.
